Discussion Sept. 2016!

Dear Patrons!

First off, I wanted to give you another personal thanks from Jack and I for deciding to support us and our little comic. We’ve been having a lot of fun with it so far and we can’t wait to share more of it with you! Every month we’re going to do our best to give you a little behind the scenes look at what we’re doing with the pages and why.
This Month’s comics!

 General Overview
I’ll be honest, the first three pages are one part introduction and one part joke. We started this whole comic based on our musing about what it must be like as a faculty member at a school like Hogwarts and having to deal with students who always seem to possess fervent death wishes. So beginning with the focus on some simulacra of a certain notorious trio and then doing a bait-and-switch with them just sort of tickled me.
Beyond the joke though, I was trying to create a quick and exciting hook that we could lock down in four pages before introducing you all to our main protagonist (You’ll meet her next Sunday) as well as give the reader some context for her arrival to the school. As you might be able to tell from the fourth page, its very likely there could be some vacancies in the Wrangler positions at Northwind Academy moving forward.
The Little Bits
The amount of dialogue on any given page doesn’t leave a ton of room to throw information at the reader, but we tried to cram as much in as we could. With the Trio exiting stage right (never to be seen again, I assure you.) I hope readers were able to pick up a few things about the school. For those who took note, the mention of the “Wyrm’s dormitories” does indeed mean that this school has their student body divided into houses like another certain magical place of learning, and you’ll learn more about those moving forward. Speaking of people never to be seen again, I hope no one was super jazzed about Mike and Anna. They just went through all the dialogue they are likely ever going to get.
The Hard Bits
As a writer, I’ve always been intimidated by world building. I tend to get wrapped up in really cool scenes I have in my head or the characters I’m trying to create, so I often stumble a bit when I realize I need to make them exist in a living, breathing, world of their own.
Getting readers to accept and buy in to different fantastical elements that are going to become relevant later has always been something that I stress out about. I am terrified of exposition and will often twist myself into knots trying to avoid it, because I don’t want to sit people down to try and explain “What’s just so cool!!!” about my dumb little world. That being said, I realize that sometimes a bit of exposition isn’t the worst thing in the world, so long as the reader is interested in learning whatever I’m trying to present. Long story short: I’m working on it and I hope I’m not leaving everyone too long in the dark.
So if you’re sitting there wondering if Apocrypha is going to be something you should remember or if you’re curious as to the ins and outs of magic in this world, then I can assure you that everything will be duly explained in time. With limited page space and even more limited lines of dialogue, its been a long running game of trying to figure out exactly what pieces of information need to come out first. Hopefully I’ve done a decent job of it, but if too many people are scratching their a few months from now, we have some ideas about how we might illuminate more of the world without sacrificing narrative momentum and character development.
Now, on to the art!
